POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

I've always had more trouble with a 1/4-20 tap. Almost no material left after the flutes are cut.

Perhaps I am just very careful with a #6 tap, since it is so small. I always use a very small tap handle for #10 or smaller taps.
Mechanically, you are absolutely correct. The 1/4-20 is one of a few taps that the closest drill size is undersized compared to the theoretical hole diameter requirements.

Some old man machinist said, "If I can hold it, I can machine it." I try to remember that. This was like clamping a banana to my table. Turned out really solid with just two clamps and two 1-2-3 blocks under each toe.

Whuddizzit? It's the transfer case bucket from my Samurai. I'm fitting an extra transmission in between the 5-speed and the transfer case for 20 forward gears. Need to make space and add extra support at the same time. The extra torque is going to put a bit of added stress on the already light frame and mounts.

Only 20 forward gears?! LOL = totally awesome!! Keep posting progress on this build, please!

What is your lowest crawl ratio?
The latest works out to 146:1. I was too deep before, too much trouble on the freeway. This time I'm on taller R&Ps, slightly taller final drive, shorter 5th and taller 3rd, and a teensy bit less low range reduction. Plus the 1.8:1 in the middle, that should be good fun. My spreadsheet is a mess. Been doing something or another with the Sammy since 2005, including keeping spreadsheets on gears. I don't know what to call it at this point, v.4.0? v.5.0? Lots of revisions. Lots of history.

John, I have to ask what happened to the motor.

Ugliest vehicle I've ever owned but dang, I love it. I call mine the toaster. It's black.

I have a 2006 Blue. Just went past 250,000 miles. My favorite vehicle by far. That was the last vehicle I have purchased new.

I hope I get another 250,000 out of it.

Cutting oil is my blood.

I have to ask, how long is the rear driveline?

What rear end and front end are you using?

Haven't owned a Sammi but I have a Tracker. Fun little vehicle. Down until I find a good 8v head. Really surprised at how much I like it.
