My time has come..........surgery

Sometimes recovery sneaks up on you. After two knee replacements I couldn't cross my legs and my wife would have put on my shoes for me. One day I was in a hurry and without thinking I crossed my legs to put on my shoes. "Hey, I didn't know I could do that!"

How are the knees now?

Day+7 - first real day of therapy. It's going to be awhile getting muscles and tendons stretched out after not being used due to limited joint mobility. I was able to pick the walker up and hobble from the bathroom to the chair. It wasn't pretty but it's progress. Kids were excited I could walk. I've just about fully weaned off the oxy. Instead of 2 every 4-6 hours, I'm taking 1 every 12.

Ice and elevation are your new best friends!

I had my right hip replaced about 6-7 years ago, hip was injured back around 1968 in a bike accident. Had nothing but trouble afterwards, another two surgeries to release the psoas tendon and remove the bursa followed with no luck.
So, I saw another surgeon a little over 12 months ago who spotted the problem straight away, the first surgeon didn't put the cup in flush, so, it was rubbing against the tendon. Two falls also didn't help, the implant coming loose. Underwent the knife again and had a new hip inserted, this one is massive, almost reaching the knee. And of course, Promptly fell over again, but no damage done. Hip is fine now, only problem, I cannot put my sock on that foot, haven't been able to get anywhere near my foot since. Small price to pay.

I'm no stranger to surgery: Ulna nerve transposition, index and second fingers fused, pinky and ring now have plastic joints, plastic joint in my great toe, right lung removed, gall bladder removed. Sooner or later I'm going to have to get my elbows replaced. I had images taken a few years ago, when I saw the surgeon, I asked if he could do a scrape and clean 'ha, ha', said he' there's nothing left to scrape and clean, both elbow joints are gone, only hanging in there by tendons, muscles and skin'. He further stated I needed replacement surgery 'now'. If I have the surgery, I'll be able to lift nothing heavier than a coffee cup, no repetitive movements and so on. I haven't finished with life yet, so I demurred. I get by alright, it hurts but pain comes with RA, you get used to it.

good luck with that. i've had 3 failed elbow surgeries. i think the elbow is the worst place to have an orthopedic issue. from what you say they are probably going to cut out an inch or so off your radial tip. they did mine and i couldn't do squat afterwards. 3 physical therapies later my last girl wrote the doc and said fix him before you send him back
so they put in an implant. it's better but the implant is not where it needs to be and is painful. i can tighten a drill chuck but can't loosen it. screwdrivers same way. no iron man grip anymore
to correct that i would need more surgery. immobilized six weeks and then would have very limited extension/contraction (where i started from)

if, on the other hand, they put a new joint in - forget it

Day+8 - stopped the oxy. Traded the walker for a cane.

Day+10 - follow up at the hospital. Got to see the xray from surgery. No wonder I'm sore. Bandage removed from incision and given ok to drive an automatic. Mainly due to stopping the pain meds. Swelling from the quad is gone but still swollen around incision and to the outside of the hip. Got the OK to stand in front of the machines if I want. Just no changing chucks or rotary tables just yet. So I'm not sure what I can do but I'll probably go play with Creo and get some tools ordered that I need for some fixtures.

Day+11 - daughter's softball practice got moved to a different location with no bleachers. Fold up chair not very comfortable. Ended up standing for an hour and a half. This might have been a mistake as I'm sore today (surgery +12).

I'm getting some movement back in various directions that I couldn't do a few days ago. I was ambitious in the recovery and now realize it will be at least a month.
