If that book arrives tomorrow it will be a while before you are back. Just leafing through it will keep you engrossed for a week

Cheers Phil

Man Everybody Has to have a Machinery Handbook :) you know that big drawer between the Smaller Drawers on your Gerstner tool box is designed to fit that book. No Tool Box is complete with out one !

I never knew that was what that drawer was for. That is my cool fact for the day.

Thanks,
Jeff

Yup, and the drawer typically has a hole in the bottom so you can push the book up and get a grip on it.

I got mine with my Gerstner.

The guy that bought my Gerstner new got it with his gerstner.

It was inscribed with his name, date and "Merry Christmas"

I treasure both for the history of the gentleman who owned it and made a living with them.

I was lucky enough to have mine Handed down to me as a thank you for helping out on a job. fortunately /unfortunately 80 years of Love, Cutting Fluid and dirt has taken it's toll on it. Now it is my Drafting box that lives beside my Drafting Board. I every now and again think about popping the looser joints loose and Gluing them. Maybe getting some of that Restorer-cleaner for the wood and leatherette. Then I take my pill and see what a seriously Stupidly bad idea that is! any kind of " RESTORATION " would be an injustice , and would as good as erase 2 Lifetimes Mine and the Old guy that made his living from it. I mean every Scratch, Nick, Chip and Oily finger print is a record of a man's Life's work. "Like here I was, the is the contribution my Life made"

Thanks for the stories, surprising how a book can become such a part of ones life. My shop copy will be 40 next year, still in good shape, but well bookmarked [dark] on the edge in places frequently used.

The Handbook is a timless like the BIBLE the information never changes. Mine is from 1974 and way over used

Hi guys,

One of the best books ever to come out of America! I have two copies, picked both up at a most reasonable cost years ago, My oldest one is a second edition, a nice little brown leather cover, The second is a bit more careworn with usage, got it from old machinist twenty years ago, It is stamped somewhere inside "H M Torpedo Works Alexandria" Not the Egyptian Alexandria, But Alexandria in Dumbartonshire Scotland, Which closed down about 1960, Guess it must have followed the old guy home. (it dates from the early nineteen forties, I keep it for reference on a shelf in my workshop)

As everyone has stated in their postings, these books are golden as regards the info on almost anything worth knowing in the machine shop sphere, The Machinery Publishing Co must have had in their day a team of technical bods. second to none
