70 C10 resto-mod (was Chevy culture shock)

Not sure if that's RTV cooking out(courtesy of previous owner), or 30Y of accumulated tar wedged in there, but I think it's time for new manifold gaskets.
If it ain't one damn thing, it's another...

Looks like 30 year old goo with a tiny exhaust leak to me. A gasket set is not too expensive and takes about 4 hours to do. The worst part is scraping off the old cooked on gasket.

That's what I figured. I bought the whole Felpro set already, figuring I'd work through them all eventually.
It is a little mindbending having to lower the coolant level for this job :-\

Period correct high temp RTV is Chevy orange. Thoughtful folks there at Permatex.

To keep from flooding the inside of the engine when you pull the intake even after draining the coolant there are two block plugs, one each side of the engine just above the oil pan rail. Remove them and it will let all the coolant out of the block. The holes are usually plugged with crap after years of running, so take a screwdriver and poke through the holes.

In the pic someone has put radiator drains in the holes. They are 1/4" pipe thread.

From the factory, no. But it was common for people to smear some high-temp around those exhaust passages.

No. Some people used a gasket glue to hold them in place as one drops the manifold down. I didn’t bother using some sort of sealer at the exhaust crossover it is an issue for many engines. At the water crossover area, I do add silicone on both sides of the gasket.

It's a marvel of compact design and concurrently a bizarre sealing challenge with "dogs from different villages"
