You need a piece of o-1 drill rod. Heat it and quench, then a little temper to keep it around Rockwell 52. Those other little plates are normally hardened and surface ground as well. Otherwise it won’t skate.

I'm not certain what you mean by "Those other little plates". Are you referring to what we have repeated called the mid-plate (with the four slots)?
 
I've got O1 and W1 rods. Never done any heat treating. Something to play around with this week.
