I'm a bit confused- Chromoly? Chrome/Moly Steels, like 4140, are what firearm parts are made of. It machines freely even with HSS tools.
Are you sure what alloy you have?

You are correct. I was wrong to assume chromoly. I went back through my order history. This had been ordered to replace my spindle before I really knew my spindle was still within specs. I'm glad I didn't have to bore a 0.75" hole through it and turn the outside to size.

It turned out I had ordered a 12" length of 1.25" diameter S7 tool steel.

Never machined S7, but that explains a lot!
