Adding big swing capabilities to lathe

I seen that video too. Got thinking making one for work, but I have a big old lathe in corner that needs to be used more.

But, it goes to show the ingenuity machinists can come up with when needed.

I wonder what that piece is they are cutting? Looks like some sort of gearcase
 
Love it. I've taken to using the mill as a lathe in some situations. It's good for short parts that need a bigger swing than my small lathe can handle.
 
I agree, what's the point. Too much work for a one time use and if it's a recurring thing, send it out or buy a bigger lathe!
I have a 22 x 96” lathe that I am going to sell and save a 14” chuck to mount on my rotary for the mill. The only thing that I will miss will be the length for doing drive shafts.
