Bolt vs hex cap screw

How important is the distinction day to day as a machinist.

I had an interesting discussion on another website. The guy is terribly worried about misusing the word bolt vs hex cap screw. I think it only really matters when specifying screws in industry for assembling machines and vehicles.

Most machinists and maintenance personnel don't care day to day.

Hex heads and socket head cap screws along with a few others . They're all bolts .

If it is torqued from the head it is a screw.
If it is torqued from the nut it is a bolt.

So the same threaded fastener could be a screw or a bolt depending on how it is used.

Hex head cap screw is just a way to show you're a machinist. Common folk call them bolts.

The definition that I saw said that a bolt is used with a nut while a screw is not. Nowever, this belies the fact that certain engine fasteners are refereed to as head bolts.
