Boring a turret on the lathe

I think, based on my perceived abilities and needs, my best route is to make a live center of my own with a straight shaft. I am 99% sure the turret is factory and was bored for the lathe it is on, which is about as accurate as possible. My thought is making a live center would be the 'only' source of error between the head and tail stocks.

Of course the largest source of error is the loose nut on the hand wheels.

Somewhere in my stuff I have a shank where the head is adjustable. It adjusts like a 4 jaw chuck does. I will find it and post a pic. In the meantime you should check to see if the bore is true to center. And while you are at it check if the face of the turret is square to centerline of lathe.
If you make your own live center the point should be Hardened.

I just went to eBay and put in Live center lathe straight shank And found what looks to be a decent live center with a 3/4 shank. Cost is about $119 but looks like it would solve your problem.
