I've seen clear vinyl plastic (from a department store or craft shop) used.

Bumping an older thread, but the accordion sides of a junk window airconditioner can be pressed into service as way covers on a lathe, or as chip covers on a mill.

Most of the grizzly mills have the way covers on them just find one the right size as your mill and order from them..

One for my RF30 clone from Grizzly was only $7.50 and it seems to be fairly nice material.
