Cut a hole in knee mill column?

Be professional about it and find the correct size enclosure to mount your components in.
Include the correct fuses or circuit breakers as well.
Mount on the machine insuring a good ground.
Electricity is not a place for an amature to decide what he thinks is OK.
 
I agree: don't cut a big hole in the column! If they built in a hole (like on a bridgeport), go ahead and use it!
Also, cramming a bunch of electrics inside a column is a PITA. I did it on a monster Berkel mixer :-(
