Did I buy the wrong thing?

I cut mine to eject only at 1/2'' from full retraction to conserve as much quill travel as possible when working.
To determine how much to cut off, first insert the uncut MT in a fully extended quill. Then retract the quill slowly until the MT ejects. Measure the quill extension from the tail stock and subtract 1/2''. Thats how much to cut off the tang on your MT.

I expect you tried rotating it with the quill extended, in case there is a slot for the tang to enter.....

Well taking a bit more time to examine things and it turns out the MT adapter is just fine.
I wasn’t extending the tail stock far enough for the taper to seat.

I cut most of my tang off my MT3 chuck arbor to get more travel but had to TIG an eighth back on to get it to eject. duh!
