Enco drill press BAD chattering

Hard to believe an import drill press would have a sprague clutch,
I agree. I've had a fair # of drill presses apart and never seen a one way bearing in one. The slopy fit of the splines is pretty normal on a cheap drill press. Take the chuck off and put your dial test indicator on the taper. On an old Jet that I just worked over the taper had almost no runout. But a gage pin in the chuck had .009"! One of the bearings was making noises from starting to run dry. New quality bearings and a new ball bearing chuck, runs reasonably quiet but still has a bit of chuck runout. Nice chuck but worth more than the drill press.
While I had it apart, I added a mill type quick adjust stop and a quill lock.
