Fray Mill power tapping?

My machine is a type 4, not the "all angle", and my head is different and simpler than yours, but, and I love it, it has a 30 taper spindle ---

Yes I wish mine was the 30 taper. Not really loving the b&s. Not horrible but I know there’s better.

If your mill is working as should. You could always get a tapping head.

I suppose that it would be possible to rebore it to 30 taper.

I had no idea what a Fray mill is so I went to google.
That is an ancient machine, however I should imagine that the manufacturer made some provision for disconnecting the quill gearbox in order to facilitate setup much like the worm may be disengaged on a rotary table so that it may be freely rotated.

This feature is not always obvious.

The Fray milling machine was built in the WW-2 era, which I do not consider ancient, and they are a well built precision machine, and a bit heavier built than the Bridgeport; the dovetail ways are considerably wider than BP. I am about the same age as my mill, and I don't like to think of myself as ancient; perhaps 10 years from now I will feel differently about that.

This does not answer the question, can the quill gearbox be disconnected?
