Thanks, Amigo. I suppose it's safe then to say that my machine was built in '40. I figured it was about then.

Re: TM-19609
Sheldon Machine Co., 4258 N. Know Avenue, Chicago, IL 60641

Book lists Tool Room Lathes and Sebastian Lathes. The Sebastian were built from 1936 thru 1946, the year the Sebastian Division was phased out. All listed Sebastian used a 6 digit serial #. Book notes that some Sebastian parts are still available (as of 1983 when this book was printed).

The Tool Room Lathes are listed as series "R". The first year of production is shown as 1945 w/ ser.# beginning w/ 0680; in 1952 the ser.# began w/ 11008, in 1955 began ser.#16955. Serial # 22568 started the production for 1956. In 1962 the serial #'s began with 25700.

Note: All listed Sheldon & Sebastian serial numbers do not show any letter prefix or suffix.

Corm, it appears your thinking mid 50's is very likely with your 5 digit 19609, which falls into the 1955 model year group.

I am in the process of restoring a Greeves Klusman conehead lathe. ser# L271 47 Someone told me they thought it was from around 1905-06. any ideas?

Loggerhogger:
It appears there is no listing for Greeves Klusman. However, a Greaves Milling lathe & Milling Machine Company of Cincinnati, Ohio was bought by James A. Wulfeck on or about the year 1941. The book gives no serial numbers or dates for a Greeves or Greaves prior to the purchase by Wulfeck, only a reference to the name change.
The Wulfeck listing, beginning with the year 1941 & ending in 1982, shows no serial number with a sequence similar to yours.
Sorry I am unable to provide more facts.

Re: South Bend 9" serial #83925.
Built in 1940. That year (1940) started with serial#80362.
Year 1941 serial #'s started with 106199
After 1946 all 9" A, B, & C serial #'s had a suffix "N"

I recently acquired this 9" SBL Ser# 35177NAR9. If 1950 started with 20000N and 54 Started with 35975N Would that make mine Oct 53? Thanks for your time.

P.S. Paid $250.00can. Including tooling......

Olcarguy:
Since lathe production rates could have varied from month to month, the exact month of production of your #35177N probably can't be certain. However, your interpolation date of October 1953 is very likely.

Sounds like you bought tooling & got a lathe for "free". Good Find !!!!

There are quite a number of dedicated South Bend lathe owners on this forum who are most willing to help a fellow owner. Please stay with us... I think you will find the experience very rewarding.
