Like 0.005" or 0.125mm per pass, less as you get close to size. A hand-crank is great to start with. Definitely a confidence builder, but you will get tired of it after a while. I made a hand-crank, it was quite useful for some iffy stuff. (First time threading to a shoulder for me.)

Nowadays, I rarely use it. Think I got more practice, (got a little better at it,) and the intimidation factor declined. But, even now, if I have to thread to a big shoulder, I think about that hand crank and wonder if I should use it. 99% of the time, the crank stays in the drawer.
