Heavy 10 gearing help needed.

So we are on the same page.....the "cone pinion" is the gear on the spindle. It drives the "twin gears". The twin gears drive the "reverse gear", which is on the same shaft as the "stud gear". The stud gear drives the "idler gear, which in turn drives the "screw gear".
I suspect your your machine has a single tumbler gearbox and may be different than mine which has 2 levers. On mine, the top 4 gears are 18DP, from the stud gear on down they are 16DP.

my South Bend book calls the gears inside the gearbox (yes mine is a single lever) “cone gears”
 
Could you post a pic? Can't see how that could be an 18dp gear with that tooth count and diameter.

Are the referred to as cone gears because they form that shape when stacked together in the gearbox?

Yes. They form a cone in the gearbox. Here are the two gears. 2.074 is the gearbox lever gear. The 1.8645 is the “cone gear”. Now you see my dilemma.AB16CEED-F8A3-40A0-A410-A60A8818E9E8.jpeg

Yep, both fit with 14dp, give or take a few thou.

(24+2)/14 = 1.857

(27+2)/14 = 2.071

Close to what you're measuring within a few thou.
 
Sorry for the mis-understanding, I assumed you were working on the outside gear train, not inside the gear box. Typically the gears inside the gear box get less wear than the ones on the outside. Most of the wear in the gear box is the shafts and the casting itself they rotate in.
