How can I buffer the starting torque?

Well shoot. It just buzzes.
Dang it.
This motor is going in the scrap pile.

Well you tried!
Now you and many others have learned valuable troubleshooting information for problems to occur in the future.

since you have another motor, why not totally disassemble the bad motor and see its guts.
you may learn other things you didn’t know before

Good idea Mike.
I did learn quite a bit throughout this adventure.
Thanks to all!

All done.

I'm glad to report the Grainger 1hp TEFC motor started up just fine and cut some lumber this afternoon at my son's old house.
It was all worth it after I saw the appreciation on his face when it fired up.

great job Jeff!

i would not want to seem like i'm nit picking, but the belt is incorrect for the pulley.
at a guess, it may need a B width belt, for the longevity of the belt.

(in a perfect world)
the belt should grip on the V sides of the belt.
the center of the belt should not come into contact with the pulley
the outside of the belt should be slightly higher than the pulley, when everything is riding correctly

Yeah, I noticed that. But it’s a cast iron pulley and it was on the original motor.
It’s actually round and runs smooth. The die cast pulleys are crap.
I bet I leave it. I’d take that bet
