How to Machine Question

There is no base on mine. It bolts and rotates directly on the cross slide surface.

Is there or was there a center boss on the bottom of compound or top of carriage to pivot the compound on. In the picture it shows the bottom of the compound flush. If no boss all the stresses of the compound are on the bolts which would not be the desired way of mounting the compound.

Yes there is a centering boss.
Just not in the pic.
The compound still sits flush so not sure how the centering boss relieved any of those stresses.

When “in the cut” the forces of the cut are transmitted to the center boss and not just the bolts.
If let’s say the compound is bolted to a set of t-slots. The t-slot bolt has alittle wiggle throughout the slots. Bolt the compound to it and measure precisely where it is. I would bet after doing some work and taking those same measurements it would have moved away from the forces of the cutting. Having a center boss locates it so it can’t move. Boss locates bolts clamp it there.

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
