The carriage never moved. A rag doesn't stop grinding dust as much as you think it does. Removing the oil and recoating is actually effective. A rag has holes bigger than the dust....
Tell me you've never cut dirty rusty steel......it's 100 times worse.
I had a rag get caught and wrap around my leadscrew a while back. It isn't visibly bent but it rubs when the carriage is close to the chuck. I don't do that anymore. Too many folks get hurt when loose rags get into the wrong place.
I did something similar and didn’t cover my ways. Didn’t know any better at the time but I’ve since learned aluminum foil is cheap, safe and effective.
I had a 13" Clausing moved into the shop a few years back . It is mostly used for polishing aluminum rollers . I'm the only one that covers the ways . One good Clausing lathe , now a worn out POS . If I'm grinding or polishing , I cover them . Period .
