If it works.....

...it's not dumb.

I needed an E-clip groove in a hardened steel ejector rod.

The wheel was 0.003" thicker than the e-clip....perfect!

Sheesh!
Some guys admire your creativity.
Some just notice the flaws in your plan.
I admire it!
I also use my lathe for things it was not intended for.
The 5 hp 16 speed meat grinder that I used to grind up my venison a month ago.
I did cover the ways - with Glad wrap.

This great stuff makes me think that a die grinder in a setup like that might be OK for a smidgen regrind of the 3-jaws, using a small grinding wheel.
Same idea, but the die grinder probably needs to be the kind with 1/4" collet and a quite long bearing mount.

And yes, if ever one does tool post grinding of any kind, just go insane with ways protection, and have pretty detailed cleanup afterwards.
Propping a vacuum cleaner somewhere to catch the worst of the grindings main landing zone may also be OK, but you can be sure the stuff will spread off the wheel everywhere.

Also. I would rate @Suzuki4evr 's wet newspaper as worth more than 2 cents :)
