Leveling an Atlas 10F lathe

Worry about the bolts not being up to the task.

Also worry about the alignment of the brackets that hold the motor and the pulleys. They are separate from the lathe bed and mount on the bench top.

With dead centers in both the headstock and the tailstock the points are dead on.

I’m hoping the 5/16” studs can handle the task. Time will tell. I wouldn’t have considered this a possibility without the stainless top to sandwich against and provide a solid clamping surface.

The only thing to really worry about with the counter shaft is belt alignment. The 3/4” change in height didn’t seem to effect this. With the link belts brushing up against the guard prior to leveling, it in fact, helped the situation.

You can shift the tail stock to get alignment front-to-back. In my case this was minimal. Vertical alignment was spot on after leveling, almost imperceptibly so prior to removing whatever amount of twist was in the bed.
