MX210V tailstock ways surface improvement question

I haven't heard of anyone experiencing accelerated due to ways that look like this. Files only cut because they are hardened; in your case the ways and tailstock are both cast iron.

Not to say that you shouldn't do this, more that you may not need to.

Good advice - there is a sticker on the lathe that said the ways were "Induction Hardened" so the crappy cast iron rasp on the bottom of my tailstock probably would not be an issue. Now, based on the "quality" of the overall machine I am not sure where they got that up to in the hardness realm, but as long as it is harder than the tailstock you are right - the ways should win. Part of me wants to do it just because it bugs me that such a surface was sold this way, but at the price point I got what I bargained for.

I think I will leave well enough alone - thanks.
