need a book about milling operations

And if you want a book with just about every aspect of milling, try "Treatise On Milling and Milling Machines" by Cincinnati Milling Machine Co. I just saw one listed on Abebooks.com for less than $10.

I have found each volume in the Workshop Practice Series (WPS) is full of info in a few pages:

#2 Vertical Milling in the workshop, Arnold Throp
#35 Milling: A Complete Course, Harold Hall
#37 Dividing, Harold Hall
#49 Milling for the Model Engineer, Stan Bray

Stan Bray & Harold Hall have published texts on milling outside the WPS umbrella but I
have not read them.

The texts you mention Dunc1, which you say are outside of the WPS publications, were my writings for the Model Engineers' Workshop magazine over 20 plus years. However, most of this is now to be found on my website. For those who are not conversant with this the best place to start is at the book style index on page 463 the full address being http://www.homews.co.uk/page463.html Incidentally, the site now has about 550 pages, mostly metalworking.

"Milling for the Model Engineer" by Stan Bray, is not a WPS book for more details see here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Milling-Model-Engineer-Engineering-Guides/dp/1852601701

However, number 49 is a book by myself with the title "The Milling Machine, and Accessories, Choosing and Using"

DO be aware though that four of my books are now being published in the US by Fox Chapel and with different titles and front covers (not my doing). Unfortunately, some are buying both versions and ending up with essentially the same book. see the nine pages on my website for details of the duplications, details starting here http://www.homews.co.uk/page12.htmlhttp://www.homews.co.uk/page12.html

Outsider,
I am particularly partial to the workshop series available through Amazon. They are an excellent resource and each book is designed for covering a specific subject or machine. I have ordered several of them over the years and eventually hope to have them all as a complete reference set. The one about basic milling is a great starter and will lead to using a rotary table and more exotic set ups as well as doing 3D work in the future. Definitely worth the price and they seem to always be readily available and on the Amazon prime free shipping program too. Good luck, and hope this helps.

May I also suggest the Tubalcain videos on you tube? They are great he goes thru a lot of setup's, traming, layout etc. On a Bridgeport Mill in his basement, Not boring and very informational!

Videos can be nice but I have a problem sitting at the computer watching them. Books on the other hand, I can sit and read for hours. Go figure....

Here are some books I can highly recommend though they cover a wider range than just milling operations.

Machine Shop Essentials - Frank Marlow

Machine Shop Know-How - Frank Marlow

Machine Shop Trade Secrects - James A. Harvey

Metalworking, Sink or Swim - Tom Lipton

Hope that helps,

-Ron
