I was able to get to the retention ring and get it free from the groove. The spindle and bearings slid out. I found the bearings in a DT arrangement. I was able to remove them easily from the abor shaft. I went ahead and rearrange them to a BD arrangement and installed everything into the sleeve.
The end float is much improved, I haven't measured it yet. But I had to quite for the evening, as my back was killing me. I'll get everything reassembled this weekend and run it checking the temperature. I do have a set of bearings if need, but hopefully the run in will go well.
I just wanted to get this down in case anyone else had a similar issues.
