Tailstock Quill Distortion

I drill a 1/2" hole for my 3/8" bar and when I get it out to about 5/8" ID I switch to my 1/2" bar. Remember that a boring bar is limited by depth, not diameter.

Thanks Mike, I'm sure if I tried a 3/8" bar in a 1/2" hole, I would have problems with rubbing. Obviously I am doing something wrong. I suspect the answer will be in the information you generously offered to send me.

I am interested in your line boring project but couldn't find it. May I ask you for a link to it?

I basically copied a process that was posted by someone else. Here is the link to my pics but the explanation (and pics) are lacking. http://www.hobby-machinist.com/thre...in-your-shop-today.14637/page-244#post-398458

Here is the post I got the info from: http://www.skidsteerforum.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=54&frmView=ShowPost&PostID=34932

The only thing I did differently was to start with the cutting tool between the ears, so I could adjust the cutting depth easier. I thought if might be too hard to pull and push the cutter through the holes but it wasn't very hard. The only issue I had was when I started to do the push cut I could tell the tool bit was rubbing and not cutting right . So I pulled the bar back to the center opening and touched up the cutter with my air die grinder and with a proper relief and a sharp bit, the push cut was even better and easier than the pull cut.

Thanks HBilly, interesting approach to boring. I think it does count for experience kinda like cross training.
