Turning between centers on a 1228?

That is a faceplate, a driving plate typically has one notch in it and 3 more slots that do not reach the OD.

It that reply is to me, yes, I know. But, if one were to put a bolt in the plate where the dog will hit it can be used easily to drive a dog.

Using a 3 jaw chuck to turn a dead center and driving the lathe dog with one of the jaws is really cheap & easy. To use that center again in a 3 jaw you will need to turn it true again since scroll chucks have some variations. Precision Mathews has a 10" D1-4 face plate for about $100. You will also need a dead center that fits your spindle or an adapter. You could always reuse the center you turned in a 4 jaw, not my cup of tea though. A face plate is handy to have for mounting weird things. You will still need a dead center the fits your spindle.
