Hello All,
I'm 100% sure this has been covered here, but I can not find it.

What types of oil should I use for locations A, B, C, D and E? What type for the ways? What type for the Timken bearings?

Thank you very much.
John

You will probably get more replies if you list the specific areas vs craftsman's letter system.

Off hand I would venture #68 would cover most of it.

So #68 way oil even in the taper bearings?
I would think grease in the bearings.

If you have oil caps your lathe may have been converted from Babbitt bearings.

The spindle bearings are a loss system, oil is used in the cups

I was under the impression that all babbitt bearing retainers bolted on. Mine are not bolted on.

Loss system means the oil runs slowly out of the bearings all over your booties
I believe 20 wt non-detergent oil is specified for the Timken bearings

That's what I figured it meant. That's exactly what happens too. I put oil in the cups and it runs out of both sides. Too bad there's not a way to hold some of it in there. lol.

Thanks again,
John

Personally I don't see a problem with using a thicker oil to slow down the loss somewhat, but definitely not grease
If you were routinely using high spindle speeds you would want to stay with the thinner oil, even though it may sling it all over you
Machining is messy! (but fun)
