D bits are crude, but easy to grind. The Deckel SO grinder was used back in the 60s to grind tools for a GK -21 Pantagraph. Mold shops used them for trapezoid and round runners. Made from blanks and busted tools, it was a cheap way to get things done. Carbide was expensive back then. Today even home shops can use an array of carbide tools with endless shapes. I owned 2 Deckel SO grinders while in business, but today I just hand grind tools or make them from 01 steel. $ 750 for a S0 copy, is a lot of store bought endmils.
