What is this shell mill used for?

I'd be thrilled to have a roughing shell mill like that for side milling stuff.......I think it's far from a waste. I might have to look for one.

Get a nice 1.5" face mill with SEHT/SEKT inserts and you'll run much higher rpm with much greater feed and dramatically better tool life.

Save that beautiful rougher for side hogging with slow feed and low rpm.
Yea I think I will, I like to use Hss tooling where I can. Seems to work better for my machine, plus you can run lower rpm’s vs carbide.
 
I would definitely try it as a face mill too.
With no 90 degree corners to chip it looks like it would last a long time with proper speeds and feeds.

I’ll try it. I don’t work with hard materials much. If I need to I’ll buy solid carbide roughing and finishing mill in .5 dia. Most of the parts I make are small. Biggest that I have done were hydraulic press plates that were 7” square.
