I'm no expert on contactors but it looks to me that they are interconnected. IOW is there one control station that starts/stops the main and transverse motors at the same time or can they be operated independently? Or maybe if one motor overloads, both contactors are supposed to open?
Also, it seems odd that the two starters are the same apparent size. I would have expected a smaller contactor for the 1 HP motor than the 5 HP motor. Not a problem, just seems wasteful. Between that, the rats nest wiring and the shoddy stripping, it makes me wonder if the electrical work on this machine was a bit of a hack.
It is always a good rule of thumb to assume that previous owners were electrically incompetent until you satisfy yourself otherwise.
