Hello, I recently purchased a century 3/4 hp. motor for my lathe. the motor has a L1 and L2 and a notation stating reverse red and black to change rotation. i want too use 6 pole rotary drum switch for reversing. i am hoping someone can give me a wiring diagram for this motor/switch.

line one has 1 black wire going into the winding
line two has a yellow wire going into the winding
there is another connection that is part of line two that has a black wire going to the centrifugal swiitch
the other end of the cen. switch has a black wire leading into the winding
there is a terminal marked 4 that has two blue wires both going into the winding, also there is a red wire that is used for reversing rotation.

the switch is a 6pole cuttler hammer /eaton (circa 1941)

an e-mail with a drawing would be most helpful: bebethshaw11@yahoo.com

Hi John, I can take an educated guess at how to connect it
if your drum switch has the familiar "hockey stick" contact arrangement:
red and black reversing wires to 3 and 4
120 volt power to 1 and 5
2 and 6 to the motor power input terminals
if it doesn't work you'll need to post some pictures of your motor and switch

If you have this style of switch the above instructions won't work,
A different hookup is required

Thanks for the reply, I do have the type of drum switch and you are correct it does not work. is there an alternative wiring that will work with . have a drawing from century motor that i could e-mail you.
I dont know how to post photo on this site.

Hi John, which type of switch do you have? The hockey stick type or the 3-phase?
My email is: scintilladesigns@gmail.com if you want to send motor info
Does the motor run by itself without the drum switch?

I have the switch you show in HSdig1, not the three phase type

John here is a sketch that should work. The "rotation leads" red and black are pulled off the motor terminals and extended to reach the drum switch.
Let me know

I have already tried that as per your drawing in your first message. i did not get a schetch in your latest reply. terminal 1&5 power from wall, 3&4 go to the wires inside motor (red black) 2&6 attatch to the terminals inside motor marked line 1 line2

Sorry, forgot to upload the sketch
Let me take another look at the Century diagram your wife sent, I might have missed something
Question: Are you getting a hum from the motor or nothing at all? Hopefully not sparks and flames :)
First test:
1) Disconnect drum switch 3 and 4. Put the red and black "rotation leads" back on to the motor 2 and 4 terminals. Keep the drum switch 1,2, 5 and 6 connected. Motor should run in one direction when switch is thrown forward or reverse.
I'm suspecting your drum switch might be at fault
