2013 POTD Thread Archive

On the way to church set up this morning, the van lights dimmed and never brighten back up.

Got home and took the alternator apart. The slip rings were gooved so onto the lathe it went and cleaned them up. However, after reassembly, there still wasn't any increase in battery voltage with the engine running! All of the diodes check out, so it looks like it's time for a new regulator. Hopefully, the local rebuilder has one in stock.

That's what I did in the shop today!

Hope this qualifys, its a machine aint it. Although I'm noted for venturing on thin ice and I dont know what in hell im doing no clue, but I have
had this machine for more than 25ys. We dragged it out of my trailer cleaned acorns& webs and stuff downloaded the whole manual thanks
internet. A buddy gave me a never used "duck" canvas, so here I go again... My kid says buy a real top, no its the thrill of the hunt!!
It even has an oil sump and oil pump, it will sew concrete its a 220 3phase so I slapped on another static phase converter and its alive!

Hey it says "What did you do in your shop?" It doesn't specify machining. :)

It reminds me that I need to get busy with mine so I can make some more tool bags. I really get tired of the plastic bags that tools come in. The tool roll that my main set of wrenches came with is miserable. I also want to make a nice canvas cover for my lathe.

We use to have some of those same machines for working leather. They really can sew concrete. Nice top and cool car. I would rather make it than buy it. I think it is much cooler when I talk to some guy about his car and he built/rebuilt/made it himself than just bought it. Anyone can right a check not many can sew a car top.

Oh look...I made a stick ! LOL ! Actually, it's a 34mm lapping bar that I made for a guy. Apparently, if you want to get the scope on your rifle aligned to exacting standards, you use one of these and lap the rings after you mount them on the rifle. I wish my hands were still steady enough and eyes good enough to bother with such things. :) Anyway...I managed to get it down to within 0.02mm over the entire length on my 12x36 Chinese made lathe. Yea, it took a while to get the tail stock tweaked right out to zero.

Now that my VFD build is finished and my mill is operational, I was itching for a little project to learn the ProtoTRAK features on my mill. I did up a cover plate for a light switch to keep it in the ON position. This switch is wired to several outdoor lights that have screw-in dusk timers at the fixtures. They have a button to change the amount of time they stay on once it gets dark. The issue is they default to dusk-to-dawn when they are power cycled. This becomes a problem since this switch is at the entry to the house, and gets accidentally flipped a couple of times a week. Here's my solution, made from scrap brass stock. Learned how to program a pocket on the ProtoTRAK and got to play with my new shell mill. Good times. I'll get some longer brass screws to match.

My dad passed away a few weeks ago and my niece wanted to have some ashes. I made this of 1.5" brass, its about 4" tall. I started with making the threads with tap and die's 1" 8tpi, then screwed it together and turned it. I was just going for whatever I could easily turn with the tooling in the holders.

My most sincere condolences to you ... and a very meaningful project, beautifully done.

Very sorry to hear about your dad. That's a really nice job you did there. I'd be proud to spend eternity in something my son made.
