What Did You Buy Today?

Well, not bought, but gifted.
From my 92 year old Brother.....
Good reading this winter!
Belonged to his FIL, who was a machinist in the 50's
Set of 6 Modern Shop Practice, 1928 printing in excellent condition.
Photo is copied from the bay, mine are in much better condition appearing to have been not much used at all.
My camera is on the fritz and I cannot upload my pic's at the moment.
These will go to my oldest son when the time comes.

How do they compare with McMaster?
McMaster is awesome! I use them for a lot of 'hard to find' items. But if you need a quantity of anything that's basically a commodity, there are cheaper alternatives.
I just ordered a 12' stick of 4140 from my local steel vendor. McMaster would be 4x that cost.
2" schedule 80 pipe from mcmaster is 12X the cost of my local steel vendor!

But, McMaster will sell 6" if you only need a little bit of material. McMaster will also make or have custom parts made if you need them. We've had them make custom screws, in low-ish quantity. They work with vendors for oddball stuff too.

I find the quality of the product from MMC generally exceeds Amazon or Bolt Depot. Talking about finish details. Am I correct on this?
McMaster generally stocks decent quality stuff. I've been quite happy with them. But sometimes I have to buy a lot more than I need, like I had to buy 10 LH nuts for my carbide grinder when the most I'd use in a lifetime might be two.

What happens to a newbie buying material? So, all exited, I went to the local Alro Metals outlet…

Me: I need this :

Alro: Sure. How much?

Me: Well, how long are they?

Alro: 12’ long. But we can sell you just what you need

Me: That is okay, pretty sure I will find use for the rest… just cut them in three so I can fit them in my truck

Alro: Okay. Your total is 864.00

Me, after they use salts to get me to regain consciousness: Eh, eh… okay (at this point I am trying to play it cool….) And search for a credit card since no way I can pay this cash…

What a dumbass… for some of this stuff I only needed 2’ of the material… Oh, and some of it I buy it CF instead of Hot Roll (that is less expensive)….

Don't they have an offcut rack where they sell by the pound?
They do and I did get some from that stack... but this was AFTER spending what I shared... live and learn... I will be buying from the offcut rack from now on. There was a lot of stuff there that I could have used.
