What Did You Buy Today?

Popped into my 'local' machinists Alladin's cave on the way back from my 'day' in the office and bought a little bit of something to make a 'compund replacement' toolpost rest and picked up a few bits of brass and a small brass sheet for possible shim use:

The chunk of mild steel cost me a bit less than a tenner and they costed the brass up to make it £15.

Probably because I saw this and also bought it:

£50. The added rests are quite handy. That's the second bit of Warco kit I have in the shop now.

Might have to keep an eye out for a second hand Warco GH600 to make up the set!

Oh and I nearly forgot: on the way to the business park's little cafe, I saw a load of aluminium in a skip and as the business owner was just outside I asked him if it was going to the tip and he said yes, so I asked him if he minded if I took a few bits, and he told me to take it all, so I did. God knows what I'll do with it but I've no shortage of mystery aluminium now.

Yeah, they don't come up often second hand unfortunately and I won't be able to afford to spend 3K on a new GH600 (even though you do get a lot for your money) in the foreseeable future, but I'd definitely love one. Were I to buy new I would probably end up with something more like the WM250 and then later fit an ELS of some kind.

Honestly though, I suspect my next lathe will be old English iron. ;)

We hit the Sampeng market in China town before we left Bangkok, and one more trip to the DoItYourself store. I came away with 4 pair of circlip/snap ring pliers, roughly $2.80 to $5.80 each, and a digital caliper which was 400 baht/$11.25. I saw a post here about some cheaper tool holders for the lathe, saw they were cheap, so had some waiting whe we got back home! Then a big hassle when we went through immigration upon our return - and had a hassle with customs on the way out of the US - first time ever for each.

I got this Yuasa tail stock at an auction for next to nothing to use with my 10'' rotary table. Has anyone seen a tip like this before? Normally they have a off centered point, but this one looks unfinished and blunt.

I might just make a 60 degree tip and lightly press it on the end.

Stolen from another website

A Starrett 459 is a Cutter Clearance gage, for measuring end mills, helical cutters, and other multiple toothed cutting tools.
You set the rear end of the gage on tooth # 3, slide the movable one on the slide bar of the unit and usually hook the # 1 tooth at juncture of the peg and short rear extension of the flat. The finger hole movable piece is ( loosen jamb nut on side first) set on # 2 tooth
and the primary and secondary angles are measured directly from how you set this movable part on the tooth relief of tooth form. Works the same way on side teeth, or practically any tooth form you wish to measure.
