2018 POTD Thread Archive

Not really a project, just a small job to make a few bucks. 6 inch galvanized pipe coupling, opened up to 6.75 in. dia. Notable because it's about at the limit of what this lathe will do. 129 rpm (top speed, backgear), .025 doc, .0042 ipm feed rate. Has me thinking about a real lathe.

 
Thanks! The chuck is made by Irwin for 3/8" square drive. They are designed for socket wrenches, but obviously that's harder to keep straight. They come in a 2 pack, <1/4" and 1/4-1/2.

I'm considering making the guide rod spring loaded as well, so it will follow along without my help.
I made one that was spring loaded with about 1.5" of travel. I have a 3/4" chuck mounted on an MT3 adapter and mount the tap guide in the chuck when tapping on the lathe.

Salvaged a 2.5 hp motor and all the electronics from a treadmill that my nephew wanted to get rid of. I don't have a
specific use in mind, but I know it could be useful at some point. I'll just have to figure out what to do with
the electronics, since I'm clueless about that stuff.

I made a collet drawbar long enough to keep the gear cover closed and turned a 1 1/2 - 8 nut down for a thread protector. I'm not ready to try internal threading so the nut seemed like a good idea. The paper on the belt cover is a speed chart I made up. Albeit slow I am making progress.

Finished (yesterday) making the main parts of my trailer ramps.

Now I need to figure out how to weld the hinges onto these parts, as it's fairly critical that the hinges be properly aligned, so they fold properly (that they don't bind and don't fold slightly at an angle and interfere with the other ramp.
 
If they fold down flat on the bed of the trailer that's where I would start. That's the way I did a set of twin gates for a friend's trailer.

What kind of hinge are you planning?

I have a treadmill motor on my bandsaw and my lathe. The controller you have there is easy to hook up a potentiometer (10k works) to give you full variable speed. I machined the grooves off the flywheel to fit it with a pulley. The fly wheel just threads on. (Usually left hand threads) The transformer looking thing is a choke and goes in series with the motor. It smooths out the dc current and reduces the arcing on the brushes. If you need anymore questions answered let me know.

I have a treadmill motor on my bandsaw and sb lathe. The controller in the pic is very easy to set up. Hook up a 10k potentiometer and you have full variable speed. The transformer looking thing is a choke. It smooths out the dc current and reduces arcing on the brushes. You really only need the one board. If you can you may want try to salvage the mount from the treadmill. I machine the grooves off the flywheel and make a pulley to fit it. The flywheel is usually attached with left hand threads. If you have more questions let me know.

If you don't have belt grinder, that motor would be an outstanding candidate.
