Darn Mercedes 1980 450 SL tyranny bolts.

Needed to remove tyranny to fix it, service manual directs to remove both, smacks of too much effort.

Metric bolts, fine thread, and down in the cowling area where you cannot see or touch them.

Collect every 3/8 drive extension that we could find with a couple swivel joints and we got them from below.

Getting out pain in the butt, putting back in royal pain, lots of tape to hold things in and strings to guide, felt like a puppeteer...

Been there , done that. Far too many times. Universal joints don't work well because they flop around too much although a piece of rubber hose helps to control them... if there is enough clearance. I had a whole collection of 2" extensions which have enough clearance to provide a 30º arc. The temptation to frill a hole through the firewall is almost as great as the one to shoot the engineer who designed the monstrosity.

Put a replacement engine in a 98 Suburban, bell housing bolts we're absurd. Pulled back the carpet, and drilled a hole, put in a plastic plug when I was done. Mike
