Dipping into the Arduino Uno pool- Now what?

I just used online resources to learn this stuff, and a lot of just plain trying things. If you don't make mistakes, you aren't trying hard enough! At least with most software, a mistake is not a big deal.

Of course if you are controlling machines, that's a different story. If you want to do that, I recommend you work your way up to it. Neither software nor machines have respect for human body parts.
 
Fortunately, the gadget I controlled with the Arduino was not extremely powerful. On recommendation from Rick Sparber ( a forum member), I added a couple of magnet-based breakaway features ... to protect anybody who might reach in where or when he shouldn't
