I'd really appreciate a few more pictures if you could....like a view of the carriage from the tailstock.
Is that a transmission above the headstock?

It is a transmission of sorts. Something someone added after line shaft wasn't used.

I will get some better up close pics when I get back up to my barn.

I have plenty of Iso 46 hydraulic oil on hand.

Yep!

The hydraulic oil has all sorts of additives that help in de-rusting, preventing rust, removing moisture, definitely lubricating, and just a good old oil in general to use. Especially for the spindle bearings!

BTW-Nice old lathe you have there. And it's in nice shape, too. Hasn't been molested, yet!

Well that's easy then!!
I got plenty of hydraulic oil around.
