Hello All My First Post And New Machine

Welcome to the site!

I once saw a similar setup. The old gentleman had an ancient LeBlonde lathe with leather belt drive and he was using a Ford gearbox from a Model T. The motor/gearbox was overhead with the shift lever hanging down at forehead level.

This weekends progress

Your second photo raised my pucker factor quite a bit. Am I correct in thinking that's the top of the carriage and the cross slide dovetails? If so, that looks like a very nasty crack running clear through it!

It looks like a Crack from the photos but it's a nasty gouge through it

Well 24 hours of.Mr. muscle oven cleaner I wrapped the parts in a plastic rubbish bag results are pretty average took half.the paint off so I decided to buy some caustic soda and mix my own batch up will try another 24 hours soaking in this mix and post again

This stuff is nasty definitely rubber gloves and safety glasses when handling!

If this fails I will buy more and make a paste and try again.
If did free up some stuck parts though

I would magnaflux test that carriage before getting to involved in this machine. It may not be a crack but it's simple test to be sure so you don't have problems later.

Everything got an etch primer then a primer then 3 top coats the gears and stuff got run through a brass wheel for a clean up and I took.some burs off with a file

When I re assemble what should I use for lube? I have sprayed it all with white lithium Greace to keep it from rusting while I give the paint a good few days to go hard

The hand wheels I will clean up once the paint it dry for Shiney handles and black center's sorry for bad pictures it's really hard to get nice shots of gloss black!

Also I ended up buying 1.5kg of caustic soda and diluted it into a small bin of water it will strip paint and Greace in about 30 mins to a gooey mess
