Show us your old iron!

It was made in 1922, so not sure what the 1860 tag is referencing. Will have to dig in to it a bit more. I'm not a big fan of the drive system, but that is a project for another day.

Hi everyone. I have a rookie question on lathe chucks and backing plates. I have the 1922 Sidney Lathe I posted a while back, which has the 4 jaw chuck pictured below. I just purchased a 3 jaw chuck, assuming (naively) that I could swap the backing plates, but the original is a 4 bolt pattern and the one I bought is a 3 bolt. Been looking through what docs I have but don't see anything on this topic.

Any help/suggestions/blatantly obvious answers ?

I agree with Jeff, you should have both chucks. The 4 jaw allows you to hold square or odd shaped parts and also for turning eccentric work.
Backing plates are purposely sold blank so you can fit them exactly to your lathe and chuck, It's really not that hard to do. When you are ready start a new thread, so as not to jack this one, and we will walk you through the process. You can also PM me if needed.

I picked this lathe up two weeks ago. It's a 1960 Harrison L6 and came with two 3 jaw chucks, 5C collet chuck, a follow rest, and an Aloris BXA QCTP! It's not running yet, but once I get the input shaft sorted out I think it will be a great machine!

A few parts went missing years ago when the clutch needed to be replaced. Parts were scarce even back then, so it's been sitting for awhile. I'm thinking about replacing the clutch assembly with a taper lock bushing / pulley to drive the input shaft. I'm planning to run it off a VFD with a 3 second ramp up and ramp down time to make up for the lack of clutch and brake. I've never done this before so it will be a learning experience.

Here's a picture of it before I brought it home.

Here's my revival contribution to this thread.

1933 South Bend 8" Junior lathe undergoing restoration.

Cheers!

Hello all. I picked up a box of lathe parts last week end. It seems most of it is there. I have the bed, apron, cross slide, gear box, and ral piece. Missing the spindle head, but I can not identify what brand head to look for. Here is a picture of the ways pattern. If anyone recognizes it please help me out.

Thanks
Rick

Not enough info.

As @Jim F points out, the way pattern is not easily distinctive. In part we don't stare at the end of the lathe, and in part the small differences in ways are just not something people pick up on until you try to fit a new headstock/tailstock/steayrest. If you have the apron and qcgb, pictures of those, or any markings stamped on the ways, might be more likely to trigger someone's memory.

I’ll toss in my eagle 66 can too. Not exactly "old iron”, more like "old brass". Started like this:
