Skinny tire bike build, 10 speed

I got some time to work on the bike a bit today.
I found this cool looking back chrome chain stay protector on Ebay and I installed it today.

It looks better against the green without the cMer flash.

Next I sized, cut and installed a new chain.

Next I soaped up and installed the new foam grips with the reworked brake levers.

I used the foam grips instead of handlebar tape because my hands go numb when I lean on them. These will help with that somewhat.

I found some nice black plastic pedals with toe clips at one of my local bike shops. They sold them to me cheap because I'm in there all the time. For cheap pedals the bearings and shafts spin nice and smooth.

They look nice on the bike too.

I cut and installed new derailer cables for both of the new derailers.

All gear adjustments are done and it shifts like new!

I wanted to get the brakes done today too but i didnt have the right cables, that's gonna have to wait till I can pick some up.

I got the decals on! Color is a little off in the pics from the flash, they are red not pink, lol.

All that's left now is I need to pick up 2 brake cables.

Looking real good.
Can you share where you found the decals?

A while back I checked, but couldn't find the correct style. Just rechecked - the correct style is out there - one of the colors is $20, but the gold and white decal for a black frame is $35. I guess I'll see if the paint comes out clean before I pony up the bucks... or maybe a different color paint.

Nice that you found the old style foam handlebar covers. Real nice looking older bike.

I'm pretty impressed with the durability of the old Schwinn steel frames. I recently saw one on Craigslist that was converted to a hybrid style with wider wheels - it was listed as a "gravel grinder". They aren't super light weight like the newer ones, but they sure hold up well.

I picked up the brake cables and got them on and all the adjustments to the brakes done. So with that being said I'm calling this one done!

Nicely done! Reading your thread takes me back to my youth--I ran a bike shop out of my parents' garage from the age of 9 to 18. Learned a lot and saved enough money to pay for the first two years of college. Of course your vintage rebuild has me thinking about that Raleigh Competition in the "real" bike shop's window with full Campagnolo, Brooks saddle, etc. They wanted a whopping (and unreachable) $495 for it.
