VN Van Norman Parts Machine?

herbet999,

I'm glad that you rescued this old girl. I would be very surprised if any of the parts could be used on a newer machine like a No. 12. I hope you put her back to work or find someone else who will. I bet that there aren't very many of these still around. Please post more photos!

See if you can find a serial number stamped on the top of the vertical dovetail for the knee.

Unfortunately, no tooling came with the machine other than what was in the head. Here is a pic. I'm guessing it's a 5V type holder.

Van Norman called that type of spindle tooling 'C'. (Several other companies also a 'C' taper, but it's not the same taper.) When Hardinge started making Van Norman 'C' collets, they called them '5V'.

I'm not sure where to send you for tooling, but I haven't shopped for any in quite a while. tools4cheap.net used to have new C/5V tooling, but he appears to have discontinued it. There doesn't seem to be anything on eBay either. Maybe someone here has some spare collets that they would sell you? If you can get a 1/2" collet, you can get an ER collet chuck with a 1/2" straight shank and a set of ER collets. You should still be able to get new collets from Hardinge, but the last time I checked they were over $50 apiece.

I have a VN 21 (or 2I)...it's a Duplex, very similar looking to yours. It uses B&S #9 collets. I bought a repro set of the B&S#9 from Tools4cheap.

Here is a short video of the VN 21 in action.

I've looked all over the top of the dovetail and I don't see any sign of a serial number. Any other place it might be?

On the newer machines, No. 12 and on, it should be on the front surface of the vertical dovetail, at the top, on the right side. Decades of grease and grime often completely hide the number and you have to scrub the area with kerosene or mineral spirits and fine steel wool to see the number.

There's photos of various locations for serial numbers on a No. 12 in another thread (ran the #12 table past the limie!!), starting with this post:

On a machine of your vintage, I just don't know...

Ah.. Found it. Cleverly hidden beneath the phrase "Serial No" 10127. What does that tell you?

Glad you found it.

The only serial number list that I have is this one, which covers 1937-81:
http://jmkasunich.com/vannorman/VN_Serial.htm

Most of the serial numbers in that time range were four digits, usually starting with the first machine in the line having serial numbers like 4001, or 5001. The only 5 digit serial numbers that I know of were No. 12s, where they ran past 9999. I don't know how it worked prior to the 4 digit serial numbers.

Do any of the covers or anything have the model number of the machine or US patent numbers?

Can you post some more overall pictures of the machine?

Thanks,

Cal
