Got a couple pieces from an estate and made a handle for something with one piece. Now people ask what kind of wood it is. The handle was turned on a lathe and just finished with beeswax. Any ideas machinists?
I thought that but I have used Padauk before and it makes red dust (All over the shop) and this made brown. Maybe just a variant of color. I held up a spare piece of Padauk I had and it is not really as red but maybe.
mahogany - if it was padulk - it would be bright burnt orange and patinas to a dark read - looks like African Mahogany if I had to guess just by the picture Most mahogany is soft -you can cut it with a hard fingernail
I have turned some Padauk (In fact, just the other day) and it produces vibrant red dust and chips. If it did the same for you it's probably Padauk. It does look like Mahogany, but Mahogany dust is brown and it's not nice to work with.
