Looking for opinions on a belt grinder for lathe tools

Thanks Guys, exactly the kind of feedback this old, retired trucker is looking for as I know nothing much about the electrical end of sander/grinder equipment and really appreciate the opinions and advise from folks on this site

Judging from what I have read so far on this topic it's beginning to look like the motor end of a grinder build will be well into the $300-$500 range then,
so I hesitate to bring this up, but there are surplus suppliers.
I have not needed a 3ph yet, but down in south Jersey is this place: CG Surplus I am considering getting a 1 or 2 hp motor for my mill, so I can put a vfd on it. It's a pain having to change the first belt for low gears.

So, what will a motor set me back If I build this.
Perhaps I could use the moto from my current Tool Shop sander?
The steel, welding and machine work will not be an issue, There are places around here I can get drops for a decent price.
If you can find a 3-phase motor the right size for a couple hundred, a drive is another hundred and there you go.

3 phase is out as I only have single phase in my shop.
Does this fellow suggest a HP range to use in this build?
3phase isn't out. Drives off of Amazon or ebay for up to 3 hp are in the $100 range. I have 3 of them installed on various tools all working well and not that complicated

I've been saving a 2HP DC treadmill motor I got for free (well, I had to disassemble and carry it out of a basement....) for a grinder.
Will just have to find a way to close the permanent magnet motor off from the dust.

Brian

3 phase with a VFD is the only way to roll on a custom built belt grinder. Buy once, cry once.

Iron horse 2HP 3phase motor, Amazon VFD, and ammo box enclosure is the cheapest good option.

This motor is in Oakland and is available for viewing by arrangement between 7-9pm on weekdays and on Sunday, 2/27 in the daytime. This beauty is heavy and will require the strength of two men or more to get it into the vehicle. It will need a dolly and leather gloves with proper shoes for protection.

This is a 230 volts motor and will need that type of outlet. The location where it's at does not have that sort of plug so this is not tested. It is likely to work and is sold as is with no returns. Use this type of motor in your shop and make things!
