USA Totality Eclipse 2024

It was about 82% here... I tried to take cellphone pics thru my autodarkening welding helmet, but couldn't get then to work out at all.

I didn't have any issues with triggering the lense to darken... IF the lense was already on... but wouldn't trigger if it was off. This is a Miller helmet, it is designed to automatically turn on and darken if you strike an arc with the lense off. It would 'auto-on' almost up to the peak of the eclipse, but wouldn't at the peak...

Was totally worth the 2 hour drive south to get in the path of the total eclipse.
The viewing glasses were a bit disappointing but the view through my Miller auto darkening was fantastic. Had to turn the sensitivity to max to get it to trigger though,
The darkness was impressive with 360 degree sunset. Temperature drop was very noticeable.
Some cloud cover at the beginning that increased as the event went on.

We got very lucky today. We found a country cooking restaurant in Golinda, TX just south of Waco. The weather started out cloudy but the closer to eclipse time the better it got. Lots of broken clouds were passing from two different directions at different altitudes. Totality lasted about 3:40 and we had a clear view for about 3 minutes. I set up a high quality 80mm refractor with a solar filter attached to the lens hood. The best part was sharing the telescope with others that only had solar glasses. The views through the telescope with a low power eyepiece were spectacular.

Especially interesting was the reaction of animals off in the distance. The dogs and coyotes started howling when totality arrived. Our little Jack Russell mix started getting edgy after the how started but didn’t noticeably react until she heard the howling.

This might be controversial but I found it amusing that there were people out there that were saying this was a sign from a deity, or it's the rapture, or whatever. And I mean the ones that believed it.

We knew about this eclipse coming, decades ago.

The thought that it's some sort of an event indicating doom for all mankind is a 5000 year old thought. I found it quite humorous.

I went outside, knowing that there was a 23% eclipse here. I figured the overcast clouds might just shadow the eclipse enough to see it.
Well, it wasn't as overcast as I thought. Just less sunlight. About 23% less. LOL.
It was a quick glance. Kind of like accidentally looking at a welding arc. I'm sure I didn't do any damage.

Some in congress were saying that. Stupid people, amazing that they are elected. Understanding of worldly things means nothing to these people.

Thought I would share my experience of the eclipse from lake Magog. Hotels were completely booked up here, and a lot of New England licence plates in the parking lots. I just made it a day trip from montreal. We had among the best views to be had as there was minimal cloud coverage in quebec at the time.

In the photos below you can see the complete eclipse over the lake. The lakeview area where the street lamps came on, and the horizon fully lit as it is daylight over there.

At partial eclipse you can see that the street signs and trees or where ever there was a shadow from a hole, that the sun and moon cast a crescent moon on the ground.

Had Fun with the wife and kid at Bolton Valley Ski area in VT for the day. Sat up on the mountain to get a view of Canada and NY across Lake Champlain. Spring skiing at its finest. A bit slushy but what was funny is coming down the trail after the event it actually crusted up a little.

What I was looking for was the surrounding mountain views and actually seeing what looked like a ginormous thundercloud coming in from the SW. Everything was dark but NW was the low light sun set view, much like one of the pictures on the above post.

Had clouds that naturally cleared 45 minutes after totality! Got what I could. Best of 60. Totality started and the clouds blocked it just a few moments in. The slow shutter speed, made for a fuzz ball!

Just another fun little side effect of the eclipse, not quite at totality (look at the shadows).
