What Did You Buy Today?

Thanks. I am very focused on all of us becoming better machinists and, if desired, welders. I got a great gas welding lesson from an old timer yesterday, the helpful lessons from which I plan to share with the forum as soon as I get time. For now, here is Fritz H. from Plantation, CA welding like it’s 1970:

Plantation, CA ??? Google Maps doesn't know where that is.

It looks like Apple doesn’t like the name “Plantation”, & wants to call it “Farm Camp”: Same with Google; the name Plantation may be offensive to some people, as we are reminded that CA never had slavery.

I’m just trying to build skills here, & it ain’t free! If anybody spends a discretionary $2,267 or so on anything that is a better investment in building metalworking skills, I would be very interested to look at that.
I feel any investment in education and skills is positive.
I believe people should also have hobbies that promote personal growth (so NOT watching TV), and that is very unlikely be free.

I don’t think you need to justify your purchases or finances to anyone besides your spouse.
Absolutely agreed!

Did not buy it today, but I finished up all major machining on the knurling tool.
Looks great! I've been following James' (Clough42) progress – did you have similar issues with the supplied screw lengths? I also see that you chose not to do the (mostly ornamental) knurling on the screw lever cap & lever knob: I think it looks better your way.

where is your fave place to buy good end mills? i need some rounding over, dovetail and ball end mills.. thanks

My local new/used tool place has an online store on ebay. The seller name there is "jrwoodca".
He's honest, ships globally, everything is well packed.

Here's a link to his listings with "end mill" in the title :
https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_nkw=end+mills&_fss=1&_saslop=1&_sasl=jrwoodca&LH_SpecificSeller=1

dovetail:
https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_nkw...&_saslop=1&_sasl=jrwoodca&LH_SpecificSeller=1

ball end:
https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_nkw...&_saslop=1&_sasl=jrwoodca&LH_SpecificSeller=1

to run such a search yourself:
from the main ebay page hit "advanced search"
enter keywords at the top, and way below check the box for "only show items from" and type in "jrwoodca" (no quotes)

I have NO financial interest in the company, but I want it to thrive so the place sticks around!

I’ve done business with them as well and been really happy. Also our member @mattthemuppet2 has a lot of happy customers on here.

I actually did the Knurling after I took that picture. The screw lengths were long. The two that hold the wheel axles in I threaded some scrap aluminum, and then decked them to a shorter length. For the two that hold the assembly together, I left them long, through drilled the once threaded side plate, and then threaded the bit that is held in the tool holder. Only 2 bolts are holding the whole assembly and the tab that is held in the tool holder. Looks clean. First knurl came out a tad off. Second one tracked much better.
