I been working on an indexer, since I have needed one at least three times in the last 3 months, it is time to build one. these pictures are of the progress so far. it will be done soon. I could have bought one for a few hundred dollars, but this one has cost nothing but my time.

Would appreciate some enlightenment, rather an explanation on exactly how U cut those INDEX MARKS, if U don't mind.
Assuming it was done on the Mill, did U use any specific Cutter/s, Carbide or, or would any sharp pointed Tool suffice ???
Was the Tool run at considerable speed and how were the Mark Lengths and Depth controlled so neatly and evenly through-out ???
Our intended markings are for a Flat surface, which would not require any sort of circular Indexing, but we reckon could be measured and evenly controlled via the Mill Dials.
Pardon our ignorance and total inexperience.

I think I'll be making one of those bore illuminators looks like a useful tool. Just a tip if you don't have a glass cutter I have used a broken carbide end mill to score glass. Either find a sharp edge where it broke or grind it to a point I think a broken tap would work too. Just make sure you wear glasses the carbide may chip or the glass could.

Todays project was a little wood work. I have a Starrett 38" No.123 Vernier caliper that deserved a better home than leaning against the wall or sitting on a bench collecting dust.

I decided on Poplar as the wood to use for the storage box. I cut the boards to length and trued them up on the table saw. Then I traced the calipers on the wood and got to milling.
I used an aluminum fixture plate in the vise to clamp the board to.




To align the angled part of the pocket I used two squares against the edge of the fixture plate. Then took a long parallel and lined it up with my pencil line and slide the whole board over till the parallel touched both squares an clamped the board down.


Next I clamped the boards together against an angle plate and installed the hinges.



Here is the finished pocket. I still need to get two catches of some type to hold the case closed

I noticed you were using a downcut cutter, does that one happen to be a specialty endmill or a router bit?

Good eye Andre! I wondered if anyone would catch that. It is a carbide 4 flute endmill. It works really well for wood to prevent chipping.

Just 1 little critique. You have the space there to set the calipers in the cutout with the jaws partly opened, but there doesnt appear to be a similar amount of room at the end of the calipers for the tail stick out? Or is that just the camera perspective?
Aside from that, very nice work.

I'm not sure if I understand Phil. These calipers do not have a depth rod...if that is what you are talking about?

Brian has a set of "Vernier Calipers" Phil. The do not measure depth like "Dial or Digital Calipers". Only OD, Bore or width.
