POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

For a friend of mine I sharpened a set of planer blades and two sets of jointer knives on my surface grinder. Nothing is easy though. I have fixtures to fit my planer knives, and these were different so I had to jury rig the fixture on the mag chuck to hold them.
Also sharpened a 14” 100 tooth carbide blade for my business on the old Foley 357.

Man, I dislike sharpening Carbide.Makes such a mess, and with carbide you have to wear a mask, for the dust :(

It's not the tungsten or the tungsten carbide, that stuff is just dust to you and me. No, it's the cobalt binder that'll get you here.

TLV for Cobalt (inorganic as Co): 0.02 mg/m^3
TLV for Tungsten Carbide (as total W): 5 mg/m^3
TLV for nuisance dust: 5 mg/m^3

250x difference in relative toxicity for cobalt over tungsten/tungsten carbide.

Got some more done.. that might be it until I get back from Ireland. Then I have some other things that need to be done...
I had some brass coated rods.. I thought they were brass until I cut into them... got them at a garage sale... used some for the pivoting screw to clamp the two halves together, then decided to add a brass locking knob.
So need to cut the base to size, and secure it to the ring and base.. And make the bed clamp. I know I could have gone simpler, but I wanted to try some new things. Also not sure if I need to make a new foot for the ring where it closes. I raised the hinge side the size of the saw kerf, and may do the same on the clamp side. That way the top post won't lean even the slightest amount.

Not much shop work involved, but I did go through some iterations in my mind before deciding on the end result

Last week I put up flags for Memorial day as I had in years past, but we had just renewed/replaced the bedding planting which required new placements. In front of the main bed I planted the flags in the grass, but on the side there is no grass in front so I had to punch holes in the weed membrane and plant the flags in the bed itself:

I wanted to preserve the hole locations so that I wouldn't push new holes even year (defeating the purpose of the membrane), so I dropped landscaping spikes into the holes when I removed the flags and started to figure out how I would find the spikes on July 4th. I would keep the spikes (which have a smaller diameter that the flag shafts), but wanted something on top so I wouldn't have to use the metal detector to find them. Plastic lids? Some kind of surveyors marker? Aha! I had it:

I used a step-drill to enlarge a hole in a Wiffle™ golf ball to pass the spike head, inserted the spike and voila:

Now I can find the holes, and the balls don't look to out of place in the bed.

Then I realized that I had come up with a novelty item worthy of Johnson Smith or the Har-De-Har Hut. Plant them amongst a handful of Wiffle™ golf balls and invite your friends to take a swing. Cut a slit in a yellow tennis ball for the spike head, drive the assembly into firm ground, toss another tennis ball for the doggy to chase and watch the fun. I'm going to get rich!
