New restoration project! 12" Craftsman lathe.

Yeah, even from a wholesaler in quantities of 100+, even simple nuts and bolts have gotten quite expensive.

I noticed that in one of your more recent photos you show the 54" bed but turned around so that a nameplate is visible. What exactly is on the nameplate? And, to be answered by someone else I suppose, what about the 1942 and later Atlas 10"?

Incidentally, the nameplate location dates the machine to 1942 or later.

I guess it just says that it's Craftsman Lathe with the model number 101.07403. As far date of mfg I haven't looked or run across a serial number yet. My new/used 42" lathe bed and lead screw arrived today! So now I guess I need to get my Craftsman 6" on Craigslist to make room for the 12" lathe.
"Maybe" should wait and see If I need to make any special purpose shoulder bolts to put it back together.

Yeah, I would definitely hold off on listing the 6" for sale until the 12" is up and running.

Thus mornings work is to wet sand, prime and paint the three larger gear covers. Next will be to do the same to the new 42" bed and change over the feet from the 54" bed. Of course everyone need two back gear assemblies. The one I ordered and the one I didn't know was buried in the box of junk that came with the lathe. Couple pics to keep it interesting.

I just now noticed there are two broken teeth on the smaller gear of the back gear.

Very happy with the 42" bed I bought. No tool marks and looks to have been hardly used at all. Cleaned, primed and painted. The pics of the paint job don't do justice to the really nice paint job. Used flat piece of iron with wet dry paper to clean the ways and gibb sliding areas for the saddle. Tomorrow I'll be doing the feet and bolting them on. On original bed, 54", the serial number is 31377. Anyone have a clue to mfg date?

I have a QC42, and it is as short as I'd ever keep. When I got a 12x36 Atlas, I was able to do some jobs the 10x24 couldn't handle, but you would find that a 36" bed (18" centers) is really, really, limiting.
Well I really don't even have a need for lathe but just like restoring them and playing with them. So much fun to make a pile of chips flying everywhere in the shop. LoL I guess I've had about six or more lathes of which 2 were the 3-in-one lathes and made one a cnc! Posted Shoptask lathe video on YouBoob 12 years ago.
(NEVER AGAIN ONE OF THOSE!) I just like to restore old machinery and make it work right and look puurdy! Of course with all this I never make any money on any of them. This is a losing hobby for me! So far this 12" has cost me $850 and have no QCTP post or other tooling yet. Really need/want a 3-jaw 1-1/2" x 8 tpi self adjusting chuck!

Well Oops on the small end gear missing parts of two teeth. Have you decided yet what you'll do about it? Can't risk putting that gear back in. Any sign of damage to the teeth on the mating gear?

As mentioned earlier I bought another back gear assembly. See post #1 picture. This is the one I removed from the lathe along with replacing the bull gear. All I would have had to do is change the one smaller gear if I had my brain engaged.

Well you lucked out there, twice. Once in that a PO must have started on a project to replace the gear and never got a round tuit. and second that you were able to find it afterwards..
